I stared doing some wood working as hobby work by making a coffee table. I started making cutting boards because of some vague interest and them looking cool. As I do them I will be posting them here for all to see.

Cutting board

First cutting board That I made was defiantly a learning experience. The whole process was new and I wasn’t sure if I was doing everything right. From cutting boards to size, gluing, clamping. The hardest part was plaining for sure. I made this board to wide to fit into the planer that I wanted to purchase. I purchased a router and planed that way. I sanded down to 800 grit which is so smooth that I could hardly hold it. After it was done I gave it as a gift to someone and its now more of a display piece than a cutting board, ugh.

When I got the wood for the first board I got more than I needed. After the first one turned out so well I decided to make more because why not? So I did all the same things as the last one, cut the woods, glued and clamped, planed, then sanded. After I finished sanding I dropped the board. Then I had to figure out how to do a filler that is food safe. The person I gave this one to actually uses it.

Third board all steps are the same as I’ve expressed above. My only problem was that there was a void created near one of the ends that I cut out so it wouldn’t cause problems later on. Other than that it went as planed and the person I gave it to is a former butcher and he that the board was amazing.

First commission.

I showed my previous three boards to my sales rep just because I’ve been enjoying showing these off. He paid me to make one for his wife for Christmas and only asked that I use Purple Heart on the outside pieces and in the middle. My goal was to do a gradient effect through the board. This board was about 1 3/4” thick and I sawed 30 degree angles off the end to act as angles for holding it.

When I asked my sister what she wanted for Christmas she said a charcuterie board, so with what ever wood I had hanging around I used and there it is.

Made this for a friend and mentor whom just had a kid as a congratulations gift. It also gave me a reason to use the planer that I just got so Win-Win. I felt that the bottom had a better grain pattern than the top, but the bottom had enough imperfections that I couldn’t warrant it.

This next one I’m making is actually for myself. I’m calling it my BBQ board. Its made with woods that are used for smoking and BBQing.
